Although Africa travel is a dream that many of us have. The idea of a continent which is largely undeveloped and free from all the normal Western influences by running is both an exciting and a scary prospect. Africa is just full of so much natural beauty and with roaming still pretty wild, it is truly a once in a lifetime experience you must seize with both hands when and if you get the chance.
While most people choose the safe way of stay at Hilton hotels and expensive hire guides, can those who are willing to go off the beaten track Africa really see for what it really is. The simple truth is that there are a lot of risk involved in a trip like this and unless you properly, you can use some serious problems. Africa works by its own set of rules and you need to understand this from day one.
There are 2 ways to do this journey of the adventure of a lifetime. The first is to do with 4 x 4. You can find a lot of people all over Africa to do this and old Land Rover discoveries are the vehicle of choice simply because they are so difficult and the engine very fundamental to fix it. With no repair garages in sight, you'll need to fix what breaks yourself and make the necessary precautions before you depart is essential.
Sleep on the top of your roof in a tent or even sleeping within the Land Rover is great way to stay warm and dry while protecting yourself against the local fauna. Its always a good idea to travel in convoy. You don't want to break and be stranded on your own in the middle of Africa. Make sure that you are always in a group of 3 cars are traveling if this is the safest way to do it.
Travel via motorcycle is probably a little more extreme, but it really takes a lot of preparation to pull off successfully. You've probably seen The Long Way Down which is a good introduction to how difficult it can be. Ultimately, the effort and risks aside will be an unforgettable experience that very few people ever get to do.
